DXD Storing

Dxd storing saves selected signals as Dewesoft .dxd files on the device’s configured storage medium. Use DewesoftX to select channels, set the recording options, and retrieve the files.

1. Open the storing configuration

Select the device in DewesoftX, then open Config → Storing. Each storing instance has its own tab, such as Dxd storing 1. The page shows the available signals, selected-channel count, storage usage, and recording options.

Multiple storing engines

A device can have several DXD storing instances. Each has its own channel selection, recording mode, filename template, file-splitting settings, and cyclic retention policy. Files are stored in separate instance folders, such as DSStoringDxd_1 and DSStoringDxd_2.

Select + beside the storing tabs and choose Dxd storing to add an instance. Open its tab to configure it. Check the channel selection before recording: a new instance can already have signals selected.

For example, use one instance for filtered signals and another for raw channels, or give them different continuous and triggered recording settings. The instances share the device’s operation state and available storage resources.

2. Select signals

Check the signals to record in the Signals list. You can select acquisition channels and outputs from processing blocks running on the device.

The example in previous picture records AI 1/Filter through AI 8/Filter.

Select stored channels in the Channels module

You can also select channels for recording in Config → Channels. If the module is not visible, open More…, then select Channels.

Find the column named after the storing engine, such as Dxd storing 1. Set each channel to Stored or Not stored in that column. This controls the channel selection for that engine, which you can also review on its Storing tab.

The Used and storing columns are separate. A channel can be Used while set to Not stored. Stored means the channel is included in the recording configuration; check the green Storing indicator to confirm that recording is running.

3. Set the recording mode

Choose a Storing type:

DewesoftX option Recording behavior
Off Disables recording for this instance.
Always fast Records continuously at the full input sample rate.
Always slow Records continuously at a reduced rate.
Fast on trigger Records full-rate data in triggered regions. Stores no data between them.
Fast on trigger, slow otherwise Records full-rate data in triggered regions and reduced-rate data between them.

The reduced recording rate depends on the firmware and signal configuration. For OBSIDIAN with 26.3 version of FW this is set to 5Hz.

Storing runs in Operation mode and stops when the device leaves that mode. Setting a recording mode configures the engine; check the device state and storing status to confirm that it is recording. See the recording behavior reference.

Check that recording is active

Look at the device status area in the upper-right corner of DewesoftX. During recording, Storing is green and the device mode reads Operation.

Operation means the device is running. Check Storing as well, because live traces can appear without data being written. With multiple engines, check each instance’s settings and files to identify what it records. The device-level indicator does not confirm every instance separately.

Recorder traces during on-device recording

If the indicator reads Not storing, check the recording type, channel selection, destination, available space, and reported errors. A triggered engine may be waiting for its start condition. After stopping, check that the file appears as Finished in the device browser or Analysis mode.

4. Configure triggered recording

Choose Fast on trigger or Fast on trigger, slow otherwise to show Trigger setup.

UI section Purpose
Start storing conditions Define when a recording event starts.
Stop storing conditions Define when the event ends.
“Don’t store” conditions Suppress start triggers in specified time or signal regions.

Use Add trigger in the required section, then open Setup to edit the condition. Use Remove trigger to remove a condition.

Set up a condition

In Condition setup, choose Data or Time under Trig type.

For a Data condition, select the Input signal and Mode. The mode list includes Level, Window, and Pulse width. A Level condition has a Trig level and a Direction of Positive or Negative. Choose the Value to evaluate: Real data, Average, RMS, Min, or Max. The dialog also has Edge options and a Trigger on first sample checkbox.

For a Time condition, choose Relative, Absolute (time only), or Absolute (time and date) under Timer mode. With Relative timing, use equal to for a single time or every for a repeating interval, then enter the time.

Set the recording times

Enter the values in milliseconds in Trigger setup:

UI setting Purpose
Pre time Includes data from before the start trigger.
Post time Continues recording after the stop condition.
Hold off time Sets the minimum time after a trigger before another can fire.

For example, a Pre time of 1000 ms and a Post time of 2000 ms include one second before the start event and continue for two seconds after the stop event.

Enable cross trigger

Select Cross trigger (send and receive network start triggers) to exchange start triggers between devices over the network.

5. Choose a storage destination

Select the destination under Storing location. The example device has an Internal drive and an SD Card. The overview shows their capacity and usage. Use Browse to view files or Eject where the medium supports it.

Files are organized by storage medium and storing instance. Use Browse or Analyze → Data files to access them.

6. Set filenames

Choose Custom filename or Copy Dewesoft X filename. For a custom name, enter the template directly or open Name editor. The editor has presets, date and time components, a counter, and a filename preview.

Filename editor with date, time, and counter placeholders

Token Meaning
{YYYY} Four-digit year
{mm} Two-digit month
{DD} Two-digit day
{HH} Hour in 24-hour format
{MM} Minute
{SS} Second
{count N} Counter starting at N, padded to four digits by default
{count N P} Counter starting at N, padded to P digits

The tokens are case sensitive: {mm} is the month and {MM} is the minute.

The default template is:

datafile_{YYYY}{mm}{DD}-{HH}{MM}_{count 1}

A file starting on 20 October 2026 at 14:30 with counter 1 is named datafile_20261020-1430_0001.dxd. The editor shows the .dxd extension separately. See the filename-template reference.

7. Set recording limits and file splitting

DewesoftX option Behavior
No storing limit Uses one file without a configured split or stop threshold. Available storage still limits recording.
Stop storing after Stops recording at the entered limit.
Make a new file after Opens a new file at the entered limit and continues recording.

After choosing Stop storing after or Make a new file after, enter the limit and choose its unit. The unit selector has MB, sec, min, h, and trig.

Use a time limit to divide a long recording into shorter files. File splitting sets file boundaries; trigger conditions determine which time regions are recorded.

8. Set cyclic retention

DewesoftX option Behavior
Stop when disk is full Keeps existing files and does not delete them cyclically.
Keep only last Retains the configured number of recent files and removes older files managed by the instance.
Delete oldest file on full disk Deletes the oldest file when storage is full.

With Keep only last, set the number of files to retain. Combine this option with Make a new file after to maintain a rolling set of recordings. Monitor the storage usage and storing status during long recordings.

9. Browse and retrieve recordings

Select Browse beside a storage medium to open Files on device.

Completed DXD recordings in the device file browser

Search for files or switch between Full details, Quick list, and Drive root views. Select files to Download or Delete them. Download recordings to the PC for work in DewesoftX, and delete device files when they are no longer needed.

Access files in Analysis mode

Open Analyze → Data files and select the device in the left sidebar. Expand Device, choose Internal drive or SD Card, then select the instance folder, such as DSStoringDxd_1.

The list shows filename, size, start store time, and status. Expand a grouped recording to see its files. Select a file to use the available Download, Load, or Delete actions.
